If your eyes burn by mid-afternoon, water in the wind, or blur until you blink twice, you already know how much dry eye can quietly take from your day. It is one of the most common and most undertreated conditions in eye care, often managed with an endless rotation of drops that temporarily soothe symptoms without addressing the underlying cause.
At Aviva, dry eye care begins with understanding why your tear film is failing, because lasting relief starts with treating the underlying cause.
Who this helps
This care is built for you if:
- Your eyes burn, itch, water, or tire by the end of the day
- Artificial tears help for minutes, not hours
- You have been told your dry eye makes you a poor LASIK candidate
The Surprising Truth About Watering Eyes
Overflow tearing is often a sign of dry eyes; not proof that your eyes are producing enough healthy tears.
Benefits
- Lasting relief by treating the underlying cause; not simply masking symptoms
- A personalized dry eye plan that often becomes simpler to maintain over time
- A healthier tear film to support LASIK or cataract surgery, if either is in your future
Treatment detail
A healthy tear film is a three-layer structure: oil, water, and mucin. Trouble in any layer feels like "dry eye." Most cases trace to the oil layer: the meibomian glands along your eyelids stop delivering the oil that keeps tears from evaporating.
How We Treat It
Your treatment starts with understanding what is causing your dry eye symptoms. Depending on your needs, we may focus on improving oil gland function, calming inflammation with prescription therapy, supporting tear production, or combining treatments to give your eyes the best chance at lasting relief.
Once your symptoms improve, we will create a simple maintenance plan to help protect that progress.
If you are considering LASIK or cataract surgery, treating dry eye beforehand is especially important. A healthy tear film helps support clearer vision and a smoother surgical outcome.
Dry eye is a chronic condition, but with the right care, it can be managed effectively. We believe honest expectations are an important part of your treatment. Your improvement may build gradually over several weeks as inflammation settles and your glands begin to function better. It is meaningful progress, even if it does not happen overnight.
Some prescription treatments may cause brief stinging when you first start, and gland treatments may need to be repeated as your dry eye changes over time. Dr. Thornton will talk with you openly about your particular pattern of dry eye and help you understand what to expect from your care.
Questions, answered
Can Dry Eye Actually Be Cured?
Dry eye is usually a chronic condition, but with the right plan, it can often be managed well enough that it no longer takes up space in your day. Because the tendency toward dry eye may still be there, we will help you create a maintenance routine to protect your progress and keep your eyes comfortable.
Why Do My Eyes Water If They Are Dry?
It can feel confusing, but watery eyes are often a sign of dry eye. When your tear film is unstable, your eyes may produce an overflow of reflex tears in response to irritation. These tears can run out quickly without providing the moisture your eyes truly need.
By treating the underlying cause of your dry eye and strengthening your tear film, we can often help calm the watering as well.
I Was Told My Dry Eye Rules Out LASIK. Is That Final?
Not necessarily. If your tear film is not healthy enough, LASIK may not be the right choice for you right now. We can treat your dry eye first, improve the health of your eyes, and then determine whether LASIK may still be an option for you.
Your tear film protects the surface of your eye, including your cornea. Since LASIK works on the cornea, treating dry eye beforehand helps us obtain accurate measurements and support a more comfortable recovery.
If LASIK is not the best fit for your eyes, Dr. Thornton will talk through other options with you, including EVO ICL. EVO ICL corrects vision with a lens placed inside the eye, without treating the corneal surface.
Is IPL for Dry Eye the Same as Cosmetic IPL?
It uses the same light-based technology, but the goal is different. Cosmetic IPL is intended to improve concerns such as pigmentation, redness, or sun damage, while IPL for dry eye is used to treat inflammation around the eyelids and support the oil glands that help keep your tears from evaporating too quickly.
You may notice some improvement in the skin near the treatment area, but that is simply a possible added benefit. The focus of your treatment is helping your eyes feel more comfortable.
Most patients begin with a series of four IPL treatments, spaced about two to four weeks apart. After that, maintenance treatments may be recommended as needed to help preserve your results.
Do Humidifiers Really Help?
They can, especially during a Nebraska winter, when indoor heating can make already-dry air even drier. Low humidity can worsen dry eye by causing tears to evaporate more quickly.
A humidifier is an inexpensive, low-risk first step to try, particularly in the rooms where you spend the most time. It will not treat every cause of dry eye, but many people notice greater comfort when dry indoor air is part of the problem. Research on humidifiers and eye dryness is mixed, so consider it one helpful part of a broader dry eye plan.
Dry Eye and LASIK: Why We Treat Dryness First
Dry eye deserves attention before LASIK, but it does not always rule it out. If contact lenses are contributing to your dryness, you may find that your eyes feel more comfortable once you no longer need to wear them every day.
We will treat your dryness first so we can understand what your eyes need, obtain accurate measurements, and help you decide whether LASIK is the right path to clearer vision.
